DANEL RAEDEKE
The central issue explored in Raedeke’s work, as exemplified in the show’s title, is the function of painting, particularly the use of the painted image as a product or application that can satisfy a human need. To this end, Raedeke’s images are designed to distill and package human experiences into single easily assimilated icons that serve as surrogates for the actual human experiences they represent. Raedeke likens these images to pop song lyrics, logos, or visual “soundtracks” packaged for consumption, with an implied planned obsolescence. His work is facilitated by a logo (see accompanying exhibition invitation), a motto (show title), and the use of common commercial materials that give his paintings the appearance of designed consumer products.
