The series of landscape collages that comprise Erf's newest work are sourced from publications that the artist has collected over decades of studio practice. Detail

"Heads", Lisa Erf's recent series of quirky, deadpan paintings, coyly questions, then reaffirms the validity of painting in today's media-saturated world. At play are postmodernism's radical doubts about originality, and through her use of appropriation and repetition, Erf addresses the opposition between mass production and the unique object. To this end, she mines the unlikely genre of amateur portraiture, not the legacy of the modernist avant-garde, creating idiosyncratic works, as alluring as they are critical.
